After becoming pregnant, my blood sugar levels have been a bit high. Today my family bought some fresh Chinese dates (jujubes), and I really want to eat them. I would like to know if pregnant women with high blood sugar can consume fresh Chinese dates.

Dr. Yang Ziqi
Pregnant women with high blood sugar are not advised to eat fresh red dates, primarily because fresh red dates have a relatively high sugar content, including glucose, sucrose, and fructose. For pregnant women with elevated blood glucose levels, excessive consumption of fresh red dates may lead to excessive sugar intake, thereby increasing blood glucose concentrations, making blood sugar control more difficult, and potentially increasing the risk of gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes can seriously affect the growth and development of the fetus and may lead to complications such as embryonic arrest, miscarriage, fetal malformations, and macrosomia. Therefore, for the health of both mother and baby, pregnant women with high blood sugar should avoid consuming fresh red dates and may eat them in moderation only after their blood sugar levels are stabilized. In addition, pregnant women should maintain a diet low in sugar and fat but rich in protein and fiber, and closely monitor changes in blood glucose levels.
