Disease description:

My older sister's child has recently developed very dry and rough skin, and we're not sure why. A friend mentioned it might be ichthyosis. I've heard before that ichthyosis is hereditary. I'd like to ask, is ichthyosis indeed inherited?

Ichthyosis is hereditary and can be transmitted through various genetic patterns. Ichthyosis is a hereditary keratinization disorder characterized by dry, rough skin accompanied by fish-scale-like desquamation. According to authoritative medical resources, the primary modes of inheritance for ichthyosis include autosomal dominant inheritance, X-linked recessive inheritance (also known as sex-linked inheritance), and autosomal recessive inheritance. Among these, autosomal dominant inheritance is the most common. In such cases, at least one parent of the patient is affected, the condition appears in every generation, and the disease affects males and females equally. X-linked recessive inheritance typically shows females as carriers and males as affected individuals, exhibiting the characteristics of skip-generation inheritance. Autosomal recessive inheritance is relatively rare; both parents carry the disease-causing gene without being affected themselves, and their offspring have a 1/4 chance of developing the condition. Therefore, ichthyosis demonstrates a clear familial hereditary tendency. Patients and their families should be aware of this and pay attention to protection and health management in daily life.
