What causes rib pain?
Disease description:
I am a 30-year-old female. Since returning from a business trip, I have experienced some pain in the rib area. I did not engage in any physical labor during the trip. May I ask what could be the cause of rib pain?
Rib pain may be caused by various factors:
1. Rib fracture: A direct cause is trauma leading to rib breakage; pain worsens during coughing, deep breathing, or physical activity.
2. Muscle or soft tissue strain: Intense exercise or improper posture may result in injury to the intercostal muscles or soft tissues of the chest wall.
3. Rib inflammation: Costochondritis is an inflammation at the junction of the ribs and the sternum, usually accompanied by swelling and tenderness upon touch.
4. Other factors: Lung diseases, heart problems, neurological conditions, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
For daily care, applying heat may help relieve muscle pain, and vigorous exercise should be avoided. If the pain persists, is accompanied by difficulty breathing, fever, or worsening chest pain, immediate medical attention is advised.
