What is fallopian tube irrigation?
Disease description:
I have been trying to conceive for more than six months without success. My doctor suggested that I undergo a tubal patency test (tubal irrigation), but I am not familiar with this procedure. I would like to understand clearly: what is a tubal patency test?

Tubal irrigation, also known as tubal patency test, is a method used to evaluate the function and patency of the fallopian tubes. This procedure involves inserting a catheter into the uterine cavity of the patient and then injecting a certain amount of fluid (usually normal saline mixed with antibiotics such as gentamicin) through the catheter. The fluid flows from the uterine cavity through the fallopian tubes and finally into the pelvic cavity. Based on the resistance encountered during injection, the presence of fluid reflux, and the patient's subjective sensations, the physician can determine whether the fallopian tubes are patent. This method is simple and easy to perform, but mainly relies on the physician's tactile perception, thus potentially resulting in some false-negative results. For patients who have already received treatment for fallopian tube diseases, tubal irrigation can also be used to evaluate treatment effectiveness. However, tubal irrigation is not the first-line method for treating fallopian tube obstruction; more complex surgical procedures or treatment options may be required for severe cases. If you have any concerns, please consult a relevant physician.
