Dr. Yang Ziqi
Gout patients are generally not advised to consume asparagus. Asparagus belongs to the category of vegetables with relatively high purine content, and the purine content in 100 grams of asparagus may reach several hundred milligrams, varying depending on the variety and growing conditions. After ingestion of high-purine foods, purines are metabolized in the body into uric acid. Gout is a disease caused by reduced excretion of uric acid or abnormal purine metabolism, leading to elevated blood uric acid levels and subsequent symptoms such as joint redness, swelling, and pain. Therefore, for individuals with gout, consuming high-purine foods like asparagus may exacerbate the condition, trigger acute gout attacks, or slow the resolution of symptoms. To control uric acid levels and prevent gout flare-ups, patients with gout should preferably choose low-purine foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and follow their doctor's dietary recommendations and guidance.
