Can patients with gout eat black beans?
Disease description:
My father has had gout for one or two years and it hasn't been completely cured. He ate some black bean porridge outside last night. I would like to ask whether gout patients can eat black beans.
Gout patients are not advised to consume black beans, as black beans are high in purines. The underlying cause of gout is purine metabolic disorder and impaired excretion of uric acid, leading to hyperuricemia. If gout patients consume excessive black beans, it may result in a large amount of purine metabolites—namely uric acid—in the body, worsening hyperuricemia and potentially triggering acute gout attacks. Therefore, gout patients should try to avoid or limit consumption of high-purine foods, such as legumes and legume products, seafood, and animal offal, in order to maintain stable uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout attacks. At the same time, maintaining a balanced diet and consuming more low-purine foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, is beneficial for the treatment and prevention of gout.
