Does the Mirena intrauterine device have a therapeutic effect on uterine fibroids?
I previously had an intrauterine device (IUD) called Mirena inserted. I'm actually quite curious—does the Mirena IUD have any therapeutic effect on uterine fibroids?
The Mirena intrauterine system has certain therapeutic effects on uterine fibroids, although the specific outcomes vary among individuals.
Mirena is a hormone-releasing intrauterine device containing levonorgestrel. When placed inside the uterine cavity, it slowly releases progestin, thereby suppressing estrogen secretion. Since uterine fibroids are mostly associated with elevated estrogen levels, the Mirena IUS can slow the growth of fibroids—and in some cases even reduce their size—by inhibiting the effects of estrogen.
However, the Mirena IUS cannot completely cure uterine fibroids, especially larger ones, which may still require surgical removal. Additionally, regular follow-up examinations are necessary after insertion of the Mirena IUS to monitor changes in the fibroids and any potential side effects.
