Disease description:

My father used to really enjoy eating water chestnuts. Now that he has gout, there are more dietary restrictions, and he hasn't eaten water chestnuts anymore. I would like to ask whether gout patients can still eat water chestnuts, and what precautions should be taken?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
Gout patients can eat water chestnuts (Bryonia dioica), but in moderation. Water chestnuts have a relatively low purine content, so moderate consumption will not significantly affect gout conditions. Water chestnuts are rich in potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and other elements, as well as beta-carotene, protein, dietary fiber, carbohydrates, vitamin C, vitamin B complex, and other nutrients, which offer multiple health benefits. Additionally, water chestnuts have a mild diuretic effect that may help promote the excretion of uric acid and thus aid in the management of gout. However, water chestnuts are cold in nature and should not be consumed in excessive amounts. Gout patients should consume them in appropriate quantities according to their individual conditions and maintain a balanced and reasonable overall diet.
