Disease description:

My father used to really enjoy eating pickled bamboo shoots, but he was recently diagnosed with gout. I would like to ask whether gout patients can still eat pickled bamboo shoots, and what precautions should be taken?

Gout patients can consume fermented bamboo shoots in moderation. Fermented bamboo shoots are considered low-purine foods, containing approximately 10–30 mg of purines per 100 grams, significantly lower than the purine content in high-purine foods that gout patients should avoid. Moderate consumption of fermented bamboo shoots generally does not elevate uric acid levels or trigger acute gout attacks. In addition, fermented bamboo shoots are rich in nutrients such as protein, amino acids, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, which can help meet the body's nutritional needs and also aid digestion, invigorate the spleen, and promote bowel movements. However, due to their acidic nature, excessive consumption may interfere with uric acid metabolism and negatively affect gout control, so intake should be controlled. Gout patients should also avoid consuming fermented bamboo shoots together with foods such as lamb, tofu, and cucumber to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort.
