How to treat an allergic reaction to insect bites
Disease description:
It is quite common to be bitten by mosquitoes and other insects in summer; however, some people may experience allergic reactions after being bitten. How, then, should one treat an allergic reaction caused by insect bites?
The main treatments for allergic reactions to insect bites include:
1. Local treatment: To relieve itching and inflammation, the bite area can be washed with calamine lotion or normal saline to reduce redness, swelling, and itching. If itching is significant, menthol ointment or herbal essential oils (e.g., "Feng You Jing") may be applied for relief.
2. Cold compress: Applying an ice pack or cold towel to the affected area can help reduce local swelling and pain.
3. Medication: If symptoms are severe, topical anti-allergy creams such as hydrocortisone butyrate cream or mometasone furoate cream may be used, or oral antihistamines such as loratadine or cetirizine hydrochloride may be taken. Medication should be used under a physician's guidance to avoid self-medication.
4. Infection prevention: Avoid scratching the bite to prevent infection. If signs of infection occur, anti-infective medications should be applied promptly.
5. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy: Methods such as TCM acupuncture and massage may also help improve local blood circulation and alleviate allergic symptoms.
