Is Dilation and Curettage (D&C) Necessary for Thickened Endometrium?
Disease description:
I currently have an issue with thickened endometrium. However, I have a question: Is dilation and curettage (D&C) necessary for thickened endometrium?

Endometrial thickening does not necessarily require immediate curettage. An increase in endometrial thickness may be related to various factors, including endocrine disorders, endometrial polyps, endometritis, or in rare cases, early pregnancy or endometrial cancer. Doctors will recommend thorough gynecological examinations, ultrasound scans, and even blood hormone level tests to determine the underlying cause. If the thickening is suspected to be due to dysfunctional uterine bleeding or hormonal imbalances, treatment may involve regulating hormone levels, for example with oral contraceptives or hormone therapy. In certain cases, a watchful waiting approach may also be appropriate, especially after malignant changes have been ruled out.
Curettage, also known as diagnostic dilation and curettage (D&C), is typically performed when there is abnormal bleeding, persistent endometrial thickening, and other tests have failed to establish a diagnosis. This procedure can help obtain a tissue sample from the endometrium for pathological examination to identify any pathological changes. However, without clear clinical indications, doctors will not readily recommend curettage, as it is an invasive procedure that carries certain risks and potential complications.
