Painful urination accompanied by a sensation of incomplete voiding may be symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially cystitis or urethritis. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacterial invasion of the urethra, bladder, and even kidneys. Common symptoms include frequent urination, urgency, painful urination, and the feeling of needing to urinate even after finishing. Other possible causes include prostatitis (in men) or pelvic inflammatory disease (in women), which can also lead to similar symptoms.

Urinary pain and difficulty urinating can also be caused by stones or tumors obstructing the urinary tract. In addition, neurological disorders or abnormal bladder muscle function may also result in incomplete emptying or painful urination.
