Is taking 5mg of melatonin at once too much?
Disease description:
Due to work-related reasons causing poor sleep, I visited the hospital and the doctor prescribed melatonin. May I ask, is taking 5mg of melatonin at once too much?
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and is commonly used to treat insomnia, jet lag, and similar conditions. The appropriate dosage of melatonin must be determined by considering multiple factors, including the patient's symptoms, height, and weight.
The recommended initial dose of melatonin is 1–3 mg, which is generally sufficient for most people to experience its effects. In certain cases, such as severe sleep disorders or in elderly patients, a physician may consider adjusting the dosage. While a 5 mg dose may be appropriate in some situations, it is not suitable for everyone, especially for first-time users or children, who may require a lower starting dose.
Excessive intake of melatonin, particularly without medical advice, may lead to adverse side effects such as daytime drowsiness, dizziness, and headaches. It may also disrupt the natural circadian rhythm and internal biological clock. Therefore, unless under special circumstances or with a physician's recommendation, a single dose of 5 mg of melatonin is not advised.
When using melatonin, it is important to follow medical instructions to ensure safe and effective use.
