What is Progesterone?
I am 29 years old and just found out I'm one month pregnant. Recently, during a routine checkup at the hospital, my doctor mentioned that I'm experiencing contractions and prescribed some progesterone. I would like to ask, what exactly is progesterone?

Progesterone, also known as luteal hormone or progestin, is a biologically active primary progestogen secreted by the ovaries.
1. Before ovulation, progesterone is mainly produced by the ovaries at a daily amount of approximately 2-3 mg. After ovulation, this value increases significantly, with the corpus luteum in the ovary secreting up to 20-30 mg per day.
2. Progesterone protects the female endometrium, particularly supporting and safeguarding early fetal growth and development during pregnancy, and helps maintain a quiescent state of the uterus. Additionally, progesterone is closely related to female estrogens, and together they promote the development and maturation of female secondary sexual characteristics.
3. In non-pregnant states, progesterone helps regulate the menstrual cycle, promotes endometrial growth, and prepares for possible implantation of a fertilized egg. If fertilization occurs, progesterone levels rise significantly, inhibiting uterine contractions, supporting embryonic development, and maintaining pregnancy.
4. Clinically, progesterone is commonly used to treat gynecological disorders such as infertility and habitual abortion caused by luteal insufficiency, as well as to alleviate menopausal symptoms. It can be administered orally, via intramuscular injection, vaginally, or through other methods.
