The Function of Progesterone
I had a miscarriage last month and felt very upset. After more than ten days, a follow-up examination showed a small amount of residue in the uterine cavity. The doctor prescribed progesterone. May I ask what is the function of progesterone?

Progesterone, also known as luteal hormone, is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the ovaries after ovulation. Its primary functions include:
1. Supporting early pregnancy: Progesterone helps thicken the endometrium (the innermost layer of the uterus), providing a suitable environment for the implantation and development of the fertilized egg.
2. Regulating the menstrual cycle: Progesterone helps maintain normal menstrual cycles by promoting the proliferation and secretion of the endometrium, preparing for the implantation of a fertilized egg.
3. Inhibiting uterine contractions: Progesterone reduces the sensitivity and contraction frequency of the uterine muscles, suppressing uterine excitability, thus ensuring the safety of the fetus in the uterus and preventing miscarriage or premature birth.
4. Participating in breast development: During pregnancy, progesterone works together with estrogen to promote the development of breast tissue in preparation for lactation.
Progesterone is an important hormone in the female reproductive system. If abnormalities are detected during related examinations, timely consultation with a physician is recommended, which may involve further diagnostic tests.
