Prior to undergoing a gastrointestinal endoscopy, dietary management is required the day before the examination to empty the digestive tract, allowing the physician a clear view of the gastrointestinal mucosa and improving diagnostic accuracy. Detailed dietary instructions include:

1. Avoid solid foods and instead choose liquid or semi-liquid diets, such as clear broth, juice (without pulp), yogurt, and rice water. These foods are easily digested and do not leave residue in the gastrointestinal tract.

2. Maintain a bland diet and avoid greasy, spicy, raw, or cold foods to reduce irritation to the gastrointestinal tract.

3. Avoid high-fiber foods and dark-colored beverages, as they may leave residue or discolor the gastrointestinal tract, interfering with the examination results.

4. Fasting typically begins 8–12 hours before the examination to ensure an empty stomach for better visualization. Additionally, water should be withheld 2–4 hours before the examination to reduce gastric fluid and prevent interference with the procedure.

Patients with constipation may take mild laxatives 2–3 days prior to the examination to clean out the bowel. Furthermore, avoid red-colored or seeded foods (e.g., watermelon, kiwi fruit) and gas-producing foods (e.g., beans, onions), as they may impair visualization.
