Can you have sexual intercourse with a urinary tract infection?
I have recently been diagnosed with a urethral infection. Will this affect my sex life? I would like to ask, is it okay to have sexual intercourse when you have a urethral infection?
Sexual activity is not recommended during a urethral infection. Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens, which may lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination. During the infection, the urethral mucosa becomes congested, swollen, and more sensitive. Engaging in sexual activity at this time may worsen symptoms and hinder recovery from the illness.
During sexual intercourse, friction may allow bacteria around the urethral opening to enter the urethra more easily, thereby worsening the infection. Additionally, the physical stimulation during sexual activity may intensify discomfort in the patient, such as pain or a burning sensation, affecting quality of life.
Urethral infections not only affect individual health but may also impact the partner. Although urethral infections are generally not classified as sexually transmitted diseases, in certain cases—such as bacterial vaginosis or prostatitis—there may be a risk of cross-infection between sexual partners.
To protect the health of both parties, it is recommended to avoid sexual contact during treatment until the infection is completely resolved.
