What causes pain in the urethra during urination?
I have been experiencing pain in the urethra when urinating recently. I would like to know what could be causing this discomfort during urination.

Causes of urethral pain during urination include the following:
1. Urinary tract infection: The most common cause, which may be accompanied by symptoms such as frequent urination and urgency. It is usually caused by bacterial or viral infection of the urethral mucosa, leading to congestion, swelling, and pain in the urethral lining.
2. Urethral stones: Stones moving or lodged within the urethra may irritate the urethral mucosa, causing pain, and may also be associated with difficulty urinating and blood in the urine.
3. Prostate issues: In men, prostatitis or benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement) may lead to discomfort during urination.
4. Urethral stricture: The urethra may become narrowed due to various causes, causing pain during urination.
5. Chemical irritation: Chemical substances in medications such as contraceptives or vaginal douching products may irritate the urethra, causing pain.
6. Interstitial cystitis: This is a chronic bladder condition that causes inflammation of the bladder wall, leading to frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination.
7. Lifestyle habits: Poor lifestyle habits, such as insufficient water intake and holding urine for prolonged periods, may also lead to concentrated urine, which can irritate the urethral mucosa and cause pain.
