What causes red-colored urine?
Today when I went to the bathroom, I noticed that my urine was red, and there was a slight burning sensation. I would like to ask if the red color is blood and what could be causing this?
Red urine is mainly caused by the following factors:
1. Dietary influence: Certain foods such as red-fleshed dragon fruit and beetroot contain natural pigments. Excessive intake may cause the urine to appear red. However, this typically does not indicate hematuria and requires no special treatment.
2. Medication effects: Some medications, such as rifampin and vitamin B2, can also turn urine red. The symptom usually resolves on its own after discontinuation of the medication.
3. Hematuria: Hematuria is classified as either gross (visible to the naked eye, appearing red or tea-colored) or microscopic. Gross hematuria may indicate bleeding in the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Common causes include kidney stones, cystitis, prostate diseases, glomerulonephritis, tumors, and renal vascular abnormalities.
4. Systemic diseases: Conditions such as hemolytic anemia and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria can cause red blood cells in the blood to rupture, releasing hemoglobin into the urine, which may result in red-colored urine.
If symptoms persist or worsen, timely medical consultation is recommended.
