Guillain-Barré syndrome refers to acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. This condition is a demyelinating disease of the spinal and peripheral nerves, primarily caused by autoimmune abnormalities or viral infections.

The disease mainly affects the spinal nerve roots and peripheral nerves, leading to progressive ascending symmetric paralysis, flaccid limb weakness, and varying degrees of sensory impairment. Some patients may also experience cranial nerve involvement, presenting with symptoms such as bilateral facial paralysis. The pathogenesis is complex and often associated with immune responses following infections or vaccinations, resulting in demyelination in the nervous system.

Treatment options include intravenous immunoglobulin administration and plasma exchange, aimed at suppressing the immune response, reducing nerve damage, and promoting patient recovery.

With prompt and appropriate treatment, most patients can achieve full recovery.
