What causes wrist pain?
Why does my wrist start to hurt after writing for a long time?
Common causes of wrist pain:
1. Overuse: Prolonged repetitive hand movements, such as typing, using a mouse, or playing on a mobile phone, can lead to overuse of the wrist muscles and ligaments, resulting in pain. This type of pain is also known as "mouse hand" or "keyboard hand," and is particularly common among individuals who use computers or mobile phones for extended periods.
2. Trauma: Wrist injuries such as sprains, fractures, and hairline fractures can also cause wrist pain. Sprains may lead to strains or tears in the ligaments or muscles around the wrist joint, while fractures and hairline fractures damage the integrity of the bones, causing pain.
3. Tendinitis: Inflammation around the tendons, such as radial extensor tendinitis or ulnar flexor tendinitis, can also affect the wrist.
4. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae in the wrist can cause pain and swelling.
5. Arthritis: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can cause wrist joint pain, stiffness, and dysfunction.
6. Carpal tunnel syndrome: Prolonged overuse of the wrist, or increased contents or enlargement within the carpal tunnel (such as tendon sheath cysts or tumors), may cause carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition can compress the median nerve, leading to pain, numbness, and other symptoms in the wrist and palm.
If discomfort occurs, timely medical attention is recommended.
