People suffering from acute gastroenteritis are not advised to drink milk.

Milk contains abundant lactose and protein, both of which can be harmful to patients with gastroenteritis. Lactose may create high pressure within the gastrointestinal tract, disrupt intestinal function, increase intestinal motility, and potentially decrease lactase secretion, making lactose digestion and absorption more difficult, thus worsening diarrhea symptoms. Meanwhile, protein may also burden the gastrointestinal system, causing indigestion and worsening diarrhea.

However, during the recovery phase of acute gastroenteritis, if the patient's bowel movements are normal and there are no symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, it may be appropriate to drink low-fat or skim milk in moderation to supplement protein and nutrients. Nevertheless, milk should still be consumed in moderation, and the body's reaction should be observed. If discomfort occurs, milk consumption should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought.

Patients should maintain a light and easily digestible diet, avoiding spicy, greasy, raw, or cold foods, as these may aggravate the condition. It is recommended to eat porridge, noodles, and fresh vegetables and fruits to provide necessary nutrients.
