Can patients with colitis eat oatmeal?
Recently diagnosed with colitis, I would like to ask the doctor: Can I eat oats if I have colitis?

Patients with colitis can eat oats.
Oats, as a nutrient-rich food, contain abundant dietary fiber and minerals, which help promote intestinal motility and facilitate bowel movements. At the same time, the β-glucan in oats helps regulate intestinal flora and reduce inflammatory responses, which may improve symptoms in patients with colitis. In addition, components in oats such as fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and dietary fiber also have positive effects on improving blood circulation, lowering cholesterol levels, and enhancing immunity. However, oats also contain a certain amount of insoluble fiber, which may irritate the intestines during active disease phases, causing discomfort such as abdominal pain or diarrhea. Therefore, during acute flare-ups of the disease, it is recommended to reduce the intake of high-fiber foods, including oats, to avoid worsening symptoms.
Although oats offer benefits to patients with colitis, food intake should always be moderate to avoid excessive consumption that may lead to indigestion. Additionally, patients with colitis should try to avoid foods that irritate the gastrointestinal tract, cause intestinal gas, raw or cold fruits and vegetables, as well as milk and seafood, to reduce irritation and burden on the colon.
