Can patients with ulcerative colitis eat watermelon?
Recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I would like to ask the doctor: Is it okay to eat watermelon?

Whether it is suitable to consume depends on individual circumstances.
Watermelon, as a nutrient-rich fruit containing fiber and sugar, can provide energy and vitamins to patients and help improve intestinal motility when the condition is stable. However, consuming excessive amounts of watermelon at one time may increase bowel movements and, in severe cases, cause diarrhea. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with ulcerative colitis consume no more than 500 grams of watermelon per serving, and severe cases should not exceed 200 grams.
Additionally, during the active phase of the disease, the intestinal mucosa may be inflamed, and at this time, excessive intake of fiber and irritating foods should be avoided to prevent additional stress on the intestines, which may cause symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. The fiber and fructose in watermelon may irritate the intestines, so large amounts are not recommended. During remission, when the intestinal condition is relatively stable, moderate consumption of watermelon generally does not cause significant discomfort; however, attention should still be paid to individual reactions, and excessive intake at one time should be avoided.
