Disease description:

Recently, my family bought some red beans. I heard from a friend that they shouldn't be eaten with certain other foods, but I'm not sure what they shouldn't be eaten with, so I came to ask the doctor: what should red beans not be eaten with?

Dr. Shen Yonghua

Red beans should not be consumed with the following foods:

1. Lamb: When red beans are eaten with lamb, the dietary fiber may combine with the fat in lamb to form substances that are difficult to digest, increasing the burden on the gastrointestinal tract and possibly causing symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.

2. High-fiber foods: Such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, and oats. Consuming these foods together with red beans may further increase the gastrointestinal burden and cause discomfort.

3. High-tannin foods: Such as persimmons, grapes, and plums. The protein in red beans can form complexes with tannic acid, producing substances that are difficult to digest and absorb, thus increasing the digestive burden.

4. Foods rich in oxalic acid: Such as spinach and sesame seeds. Oxalic acid can combine with iron in red beans to form iron oxalate precipitates, affecting the absorption and utilization of iron.

5. Cold-natured foods: Such as winter melon, bitter melon, pears, and watermelon. Consuming red beans with these foods may cause digestive discomfort symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Although red beans are a highly nutritious food, it is important to avoid consuming them with the above foods to prevent compromising their nutritional value or causing physical discomfort.
