Disease description:

I've had diarrhea frequently these days, probably due to something I ate. I've had diarrhea for two days straight, and I feel absolutely awful. The doctor diagnosed me with acute enteritis. I'd like to ask, what is the best way to treat acute enteritis?

Dr. Shen Yonghua

Following are the treatments for acute enteritis:

1. Symptomatic and supportive treatment: Patients with mild to moderate dehydration can replenish fluids and electrolytes through oral rehydration salts, while those with severe dehydration require intravenous fluid replacement. Rest and maintaining nutrition are also important.

2. Anti-infective treatment: If the enteritis is caused by bacterial infection, doctors may prescribe antibiotics. It should be noted that antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections or mild cases of enteritis and may disrupt the normal intestinal flora, thereby worsening the condition. Therefore, antibiotics should only be used under the guidance of a physician.

3. Antidiarrheal and antiemetic medications: In certain cases, doctors may recommend antidiarrheal or antiemetic drugs to relieve symptoms. However, these medications should be used with caution, especially in children and elderly patients, to avoid masking symptoms and delaying treatment.

4. Dietary adjustments: During recovery, it is advisable to avoid oily, spicy, and hard-to-digest foods. Easily digestible, nutrient-rich liquid or semi-liquid foods such as rice porridge, noodles, and boiled eggs can be chosen.

During treatment, if you have any questions or experience discomfort, seek medical attention promptly.
