What causes acid reflux in the stomach?
I've been feeling nauseous in my stomach for the past two days, with a churning sensation inside my abdomen and acid reflux. I would like to know what could be causing this condition.
Reflux of stomach acid is a common gastrointestinal symptom, which can have various causes.
1. Dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter: Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter closes after food passes through, preventing stomach contents from flowing back. However, if the sphincter malfunctions and fails to close effectively, it can lead to acid reflux.
2. Dietary factors: Excessive alcohol consumption, coffee, spicy foods, greasy foods, chocolate, and other similar items may stimulate increased gastric acid secretion or reduce pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, thereby triggering acid reflux.
3. Obesity: Excess abdominal fat increases intra-abdominal pressure, pushing stomach acid upward into the esophagus.
4. Pregnancy: Due to the enlarged uterus pressing on the stomach, pregnant women are more prone to experience acid reflux.
5. Smoking: Nicotine in tobacco relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, increasing the risk of acid reflux.
6. Psychological stress: Excessive mental stress and emotional fluctuations may also affect gastric acid secretion, leading to acid reflux.
If symptoms of acid reflux persist for a prolonged period, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.
