Dr. Liu Feng

Iron supplementation is an important measure for maintaining health, especially for patients with iron-deficiency anemia. Iron in food is primarily divided into two types: heme iron and non-heme iron. Heme iron is mainly found in animal products, such as red meat (beef, lamb), poultry, and fish, and has a relatively high absorption rate. Non-heme iron is primarily present in plant-based foods, such as legumes, nuts, leafy green vegetables (spinach, Chinese cabbage), dried fruits, and grains, but its absorption rate is lower.

1. Consume with foods rich in vitamin C: Vitamin C helps convert ferric iron into ferrous iron, thereby enhancing iron absorption. Foods rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, kiwifruit, strawberries, tomatoes, and green peppers.

2. Consume moderate amounts of meat: Meat contains a "meat factor" that enhances the absorption of non-heme iron.

The effectiveness of dietary iron supplementation varies among individuals. For patients with severe iron deficiency, it is recommended to undergo iron supplementation therapy under a doctor's guidance. Additionally, taking vitamin C can help improve iron absorption rates.
