What should a pregnant woman do if she has diarrhea?
I'm pregnant and have had diarrhea recently, needing to go to the bathroom several times a day. I'm afraid to take medication randomly because I'm worried it might affect the fetus. I'd like to ask how I should handle this situation and what I can eat to relieve the diarrhea?
Diarrhea in pregnant women may be related to diet, infections, or chronic diseases and can be managed through hydration, dietary adjustments, rest, and monitoring of physical condition.
Diarrhea leads to loss of fluids and electrolytes; therefore, pregnant women are advised to drink more water, with a small amount of table salt added to replenish electrolytes. They should drink plenty of water or oral rehydration salts to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Spicy, fried, cold, greasy, and high-sugar foods should be avoided. Instead, opt for bland, nutritious, and easily digestible foods such as millet porridge. Additionally, adequate rest is important to aid recovery.
Mild diarrhea may be relieved by applying a warm water bottle as a compress or consuming steamed apples. Pregnant women should closely monitor the fetus. If diarrhea persists for a prolonged period or is accompanied by high fever, worsening abdominal pain, or other concerning symptoms, immediate medical attention is necessary to rule out infectious diarrhea.
Pregnant women have a unique physiological condition, and any health concerns should be promptly discussed with a healthcare professional to receive appropriate guidance and treatment. If diarrhea occurs, prompt medical consultation is essential to ensure fetal well-being.
