Can N95 masks be washed?
Grandma of Xiao Qi likes to collect used N95 masks, clean them, and reuse them. I would like to know whether it is safe to wash N95 masks.

N95 masks cannot be washed. The protective mechanism of N95 masks relies on their unique structure and electrostatic adsorption capability, especially the middle melt-blown fabric layer, which carries an electrostatic charge that efficiently captures small airborne particles such as droplets and viruses. Once washed, whether with water or cleaning agents, the electrostatic adsorption capability of the melt-blown fabric will be compromised, leading to a significant decrease in filtration efficiency and rendering the mask unable to provide effective protection.
In addition, the cleaning process may also damage other structural components of the mask, such as altering the shape that conforms to the face, which may cause air leakage and expose the wearer to contaminated environments. Moreover, after washing, the mask may become a breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms during the drying process, further compromising its safety and protective effectiveness.
Therefore, to ensure the protective performance of N95 masks, it is recommended to use them correctly and replace them promptly when they become damp, contaminated, or damaged, rather than attempting to wash and reuse them. When wearing a mask, ensure proper fit against the face to prevent air from entering through gaps in the mask, which may compromise its protective effectiveness.
