I saw online that hyperthyroidism can be hereditary. I would like to ask the doctor: does hyperthyroidism inherit from the male or female side?

Dr. Bai Hongmei

Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid, has a certain genetic predisposition. However, there is currently no definitive evidence in the medical community indicating gender differences in the heritability of hyperthyroidism.

Genetically, variations in genes associated with hyperthyroidism may increase an individual's risk of developing the condition, but this risk applies to both males and females and is not limited to a specific gender. If someone in the family has hyperthyroidism, other family members may have a higher likelihood of developing the condition compared to the general population, but this does not guarantee that they will develop the disease, as environmental factors and lifestyle may also play a role.

It is worth noting that although the genetic pattern of hyperthyroidism is not strictly sex-linked, in actual prevalence rates, women are indeed more susceptible to thyroid diseases, including hyperthyroidism, than men. This may be related to factors such as the effects of sex hormones and differences in the immune system. Therefore, when considering genetic risks, family history and individual health status should be evaluated comprehensively, and regular thyroid function tests should be conducted for early detection and treatment.
