Dr. Yu Yongchao

The purine content of *Agaricus bisporus* (button mushroom) is relatively high, classifying it as a moderate-purine food. Approximately 50 milligrams of purine is present in every 100 grams of button mushroom. Based on purine content, foods are generally categorized into three groups: low-purine foods containing less than 25 mg of purine per 100 g, moderate-purine foods containing 25–150 mg of purine per 100 g, and high-purine foods containing 150–1000 mg of purine per 100 g. Therefore, due to its purine content, button mushroom is classified as a moderate-purine food.

Individuals needing to control purine intake, such as patients with gout or hyperuricemia, should consume button mushrooms in moderation. Purines are metabolized into uric acid in the body, and excessive intake of high-purine foods may elevate uric acid levels, potentially triggering gout attacks or worsening the condition. Therefore, it is recommended that these individuals control their consumption of button mushrooms and avoid consuming excessive amounts at one time. Additionally, they can choose other low-purine foods to enrich their diet, such as various vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, to maintain nutritional balance.
