Can I drink water before having a B-ultrasound?
I am a 32-year-old female. Recently, I have been experiencing abdominal discomfort, and my doctor recommended an ultrasound examination. I heard that some tests require fasting beforehand, so I would like to know if drinking water is allowed before undergoing an ultrasound?
Whether or not you can drink water before undergoing a B-ultrasound depends on the specific area being examined and your doctor's advice. Generally, if it is an abdominal ultrasound, especially when examining organs such as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, you are usually required to fast, as food and water can affect the image quality of these organs. However, if it is a gynecological ultrasound or a urinary system ultrasound, drinking an appropriate amount of water can actually aid the examination, as a full bladder provides better imaging conditions. Therefore, it is best to follow your doctor's specific instructions before undergoing a B-ultrasound examination.
When preparing for a B-ultrasound examination, you should strictly follow your doctor's instructions. If your doctor requires fasting, do not eat or drink for 8–12 hours before the examination. If your doctor permits or advises drinking water, you may drink a moderate amount of water 1–2 hours before the examination and keep your bladder full before the test. Additionally, wear loose and comfortable clothing to facilitate the examination process. If you have any questions or special circumstances, promptly communicate with your doctor to ensure accurate and reliable examination results.
