
Can I eat durian after drinking alcohol?
I am a 35-year-old male. I enjoy drinking alcohol and also like to eat durian. Recently, a friend told me that durian should not be consumed with alcohol, as it may be harmful to the body, which has made me somewhat concerned. I would like to know: is it safe to eat durian while drinking alcohol?

It is not advisable to consume alcohol together with durian. Durian contains high levels of sugar and sulfides; acetaldehyde, a byproduct of alcohol metabolism, may react with components in durian, increasing the liver's detoxification burden and potentially causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, and even elevated blood pressure. Consuming both together may worsen dehydration, triggering palpitations or heatstroke-like sensations, especially in high-temperature environments.
If you strongly desire to eat durian or drink alcohol, consider spacing out their consumption. Avoid eating durian within two hours before or after drinking alcohol, and limit alcohol intake to no more than two standard drinks per occasion. If discomfort occurs after consuming both, stop immediately and drink lightly salted water to replenish electrolytes. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist. For regular alcohol consumption, it is recommended to choose low-alcohol beverages and pair them with vegetables and fruits to supplement vitamins. Individuals with abnormal liver function, hypertension, or diabetes should completely avoid combining the two. During gatherings, consider substituting with milder fruits such as bananas or apples, while controlling total calorie intake. Keep a record of your physical reactions after drinking alcohol and consuming fruits, and adjust your dietary habits to reduce health risks.
