The exact cause of acanthosis nigricans remains unclear at present. It is associated with various factors, including metabolic disorders, malignancies, endocrine abnormalities, and medications. Benign acanthosis nigricans is a genetic syndrome inherited in an irregular autosomal dominant pattern and is unrelated to visceral disease. However, it may be associated with tumors of the pituitary gland, adrenal glands, or ovaries. Onset typically occurs during adolescence.
