What Causes Elevated Transaminase Levels?
Disease description:
I recently had a physical examination, and my doctor informed me that my transaminase levels are elevated. I would like to know what causes elevated transaminase levels.
Transaminases are enzymes present in various human cells, especially abundant in hepatocytes (liver cells). When liver cells are damaged, transaminase levels rise—making them an important indicator for evaluating liver disease. Numerous factors can cause elevated transaminase levels. In addition to viral hepatitis infection, patients may also experience drug-induced liver injury or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Other conditions—including viral infections (e.g., common cold), dental pain, and diarrhea—can likewise lead to increased transaminase levels. Therefore, patients should visit a hospital for comprehensive testing and analysis to identify the underlying cause and receive targeted, appropriate treatment.
