Can a B-ultrasound be performed during menstruation?

Oct 22, 2021 Source: Cainiu Health
Disease description:

I’ve had my period for the past two days, and the abdominal pain is unbearable—I’ve been in constant pain and unable to do anything. This is worse than any previous menstrual cramps I’ve experienced. When I went to the hospital, they said I needed some tests. I’d like to ask: Can an ultrasound be performed during menstruation?

Hello, ultrasound examinations are generally not performed during menstruation. This is primarily because menstrual blood in the uterine cavity can interfere with imaging and compromise the accuracy of the results. Typically, it is recommended to schedule an ultrasound after menstruation has completely ended, as this yields clearer and more accurate findings. However, in certain special circumstances—such as prolonged or irregular vaginal bleeding (menorrhagia or metrorrhagia) or severe abdominal pain—an abdominal ultrasound may be performed even during menstruation. Transvaginal ultrasound, however, is contraindicated during menstruation. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
