Introduction
From an age perspective, pneumococcal vaccination should be administered before the child reaches 2 years of age. Following vaccination, protective antibodies typically persist for at least five years. Note that only a single dose of the pneumococcal vaccine is generally required—except for individuals with compromised immunity, who may need a booster dose five years after the initial vaccination.

The pneumococcal vaccine is primarily designed to prevent pneumonia caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. Pneumococcal infection is a leading cause of mortality worldwide and a major etiological factor for pneumonia, meningitis, and otitis media.

Regarding timing of vaccination, the pneumococcal vaccine may be administered at any time of the year and can even be co-administered with the influenza vaccine—no specific seasonal window is required. For convenience, multivalent pneumococcal vaccination can be scheduled during routine annual health examinations or outpatient visits.

From an age-based perspective, infants should receive the pneumococcal vaccine before reaching two years of age. Following vaccination, protective antibodies typically persist for at least five years. Notably, only a single dose is generally required—except for immunocompromised or otherwise frail individuals, who may require a booster dose five years after the initial vaccination.

The pneumococcal vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection into the lateral deltoid muscle of the upper arm or, alternatively, via subcutaneous injection. A single dose is usually sufficient, providing antibody-mediated protection lasting three to five years. Vaccination is appropriate year-round. Additionally, children may experience mild adverse reactions following vaccination, such as transient pain at the injection site, or mild local redness and tenderness—symptoms that typically resolve spontaneously within two to three days.
