Introduction
Common physiological causes of frequent atrial premature contractions include emotional excitement and nervous tension. Additionally, long-term unhealthy lifestyle habits—such as chronic fatigue, indigestion resulting from overeating or binge eating, excessive smoking, or consumption of strong tea or coffee—may stimulate cardiac function and trigger premature contractions. Pathological factors may also cause frequent atrial premature contractions, including electrolyte imbalances and procedures such as cardiac catheterization.

During episodes, premature atrial contractions (PACs) commonly manifest as palpitations or a sensation of heart fluttering. However, some patients experience frequent episodes. What causes frequent PACs?

Causes of Frequent Premature Atrial Contractions

Common physiological causes of frequent PACs include emotional stress and nervous tension. Additionally, long-term unhealthy lifestyle habits—such as chronic fatigue, overeating leading to indigestion, excessive smoking, alcohol consumption, or intake of strong tea or coffee—may stimulate cardiac function and trigger PACs. Pathological causes of frequent PACs include electrolyte imbalances, neurosis, hypokalemia, cardiac surgery, and cardiac catheterization. Notably, organic heart diseases—including coronary artery disease, advanced mitral valve disease, cardiomyopathy, and myocarditis—can also lead to frequent PACs.

Patients with pathological frequent PACs should promptly visit a reputable hospital for electrocardiogram (ECG) and Holter monitoring (ambulatory ECG). Holter monitoring typically involves 24-hour recording but may extend up to 72 hours, facilitating more accurate detection of PACs and assessment of their frequency and severity. Identifying the underlying cause enables targeted treatment.

Clinically, common medications for PACs include beta-blockers such as metoprolol and bisoprolol. Antiarrhythmic agents like amiodarone may also be used. We hope this information is helpful to you!
