Is the sigmoid colon on the left or right side?
During our school lessons, we learn about the colon and its primary functions in the human body. So, is the sigmoid colon located on the left or right side?
Is the Sigmoid Colon on the Left or Right Side?
The sigmoid colon is typically situated on the left side of the human abdomen and measures approximately 40 cm in length. It originates from the descending colon and descends into the pelvis along the left iliac fossa. Its distinctive S-shaped curve gives it the name “sigmoid” colon. The sigmoid mesocolon attaches to the left posterior wall of the pelvis; thus, regardless of gender or age, the sigmoid colon consistently occupies the lower left quadrant of the abdomen. The distal portion of the sigmoid colon connects directly to the rectum. Its principal functions include slowing fecal transit, absorbing a certain amount of water, and maintaining stool formation—thereby helping prevent diarrhea. Due to the relatively broad mobility afforded by its mesentery, the sigmoid colon is particularly prone to volvulus (twisting). If the sigmoid colon becomes excessively mobile—extending into the right upper or lower abdominal quadrants—it may undergo elongation, commonly associated with chronic constipation. Prolonged retention and accumulation of stool within the colon can lead to colonic dilation; if left unmanaged, this may progress to megacolon.

The colon absorbs water from fecal matter, synthesizes vitamins, and facilitates intestinal motility and fecal expulsion. After digestion in the stomach, food passes into the intestines. Once most nutrients have been absorbed by the small intestine, the remaining indigestible residue enters the colon. As this residue moves through the colon, further absorption of residual nutrients occurs. In addition to absorbing water, the colon also synthesizes essential vitamins to meet the body’s metabolic and energy requirements.

It is recommended to regularly consume protein-rich foods, which benefit colon health. We hope this explanation has been helpful to you.
