What causes sudden nosebleeds?
During a team-building event organized by our company, a colleague sitting in the front seat suddenly started nosebleeding while we were traveling. I helped by handing them some tissues and became curious about the possible causes of sudden nosebleeds. What exactly causes a sudden nosebleed?
What Causes Sudden Nosebleeds?
There are several reasons for sudden nosebleeds. First, systemic (whole-body) factors may cause nosebleeds. For example, conditions such as hypertension and atherosclerosis can increase blood vessel fragility, making nosebleeds more likely. Diseases like leukemia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, and hemophilia impair blood clotting function, which also increases the risk of nosebleeds. Second, nosebleeds can result from local nasal conditions. Nasal inflammation can cause expansion of mucosal blood vessels, leading to bleeding. Repeatedly picking the nose may lead to erosion of the nasal mucosa and subsequent nosebleeds.

Hemorrhagic polyps or rupture of nasal tumors can also cause nosebleeds. Nasopharyngeal cancer often presents with nosebleeds. Therefore, recurrent nosebleeds should be evaluated further using electronic nasopharyngoscopy and CT scans of the nasopharynx to rule out nasal or sinus tumors.

People who experience nosebleeds should develop good habits and avoid picking their noses with their fingers. It is recommended to eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, which can provide vitamin E, helping to soften the mucous membranes and blood vessels and effectively prevent nosebleeds. With active treatment, the occurrence of nosebleeds can be effectively prevented. When necessary, patients should seek further medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital.
