How many weeks of pregnancy does it take for a woman to give birth?
Women usually give birth around 40 weeks of pregnancy, which is approximately 280 days. However, it's also normal for some women to deliver between 37 and 42 weeks.
The typical duration of pregnancy is about 280 days, equivalent to exactly 40 weeks. Most women give birth around this time. Since each month is roughly four weeks long, 280 days amounts to approximately ten months, hence the common expression "ten-month pregnancy." Currently, the estimated due date is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period—by adding 3 to or subtracting 9 from the month, and adding 7 to the day.
It is also considered normal for some women to deliver between 37 and 42 weeks. A fetus is considered full-term once 37 weeks are completed. Delivery between 28 and 37 weeks is classified as preterm birth. If labor has not started by 42 weeks, this is considered abnormal and referred to as post-term pregnancy, requiring medical intervention to induce labor. Delivery before 28 weeks is classified as a miscarriage.
