How long should moxibustion be performed each time?
There is no specific time requirement for moxibustion. It should be performed when the body is in a relatively calm and comfortable state. The optimal duration for moxibustion is about 15 minutes, which can help treat diseases, promote health, improve blood circulation, remove blood stasis, warm meridians, and dispel cold. During moxibustion, ensure the moxa stick maintains a proper distance from the body to avoid burns, and do not take a bath immediately after treatment. Specific details are as follows:
In terms of timing, moxibustion does not need to be done at a fixed time and can be performed at any time of day—before or after meals, morning or evening. As long as you are not too hungry before eating, it's acceptable. Moxibustion can be done half an hour to one hour after a meal, but never when overly full or excessively hungry. If undergoing a course of treatment, it’s best to perform moxibustion daily for the first three sessions, applying 15–20 minutes per acupoint. Afterwards, alternate-day sessions can be conducted, with 10 treatments constituting one complete course. Children and elderly individuals should have shorter treatment durations.
It is important to avoid holding the moxa too close to the skin to prevent burns. After moxibustion, keep the treated area warm and protected from cold drafts, which might worsen internal cold conditions. Moxibustion should not be performed within one hour after eating, nor during fever or active colds, as it may hinder recovery.
