Clinical manifestations in the early stage of hypoxemia

Introduction
Initial clinical manifestations of hypoxemia include abnormalities in the skin and mucous membranes, central nervous system, respiratory and circulatory systems. Early hypoxemia causes cyanosis of the skin and mucous membranes, difficulty concentrating, decreased cognitive function, mild visual impairment, and respiratory distress, with deep and rapid breathing observed. It may lead to hypotension and arrhythmias; long-term chronic hypoxia can result in right ventricular hypertrophy and right heart failure.

The early clinical manifestations of hypoxemia include abnormalities of the skin and mucous membranes, central nervous system symptoms, respiratory and circulatory system symptoms, and cardiovascular symptoms.

1. Skin and mucous membrane abnormalities

In the early stage of hypoxemia, patients may develop varying degrees of cyanosis in the skin and mucous membranes, commonly seen as cyanosis of the lips and nail beds.

2. Central nervous system symptoms

At the initial stage, patients may experience difficulty concentrating, reduced cognitive function, and mild vision impairment. Some patients may also develop headache, drowsiness, or confusion.

3. Respiratory and circulatory system symptoms

Early hypoxemia primarily causes respiratory distress, characterized by deep and rapid breathing. With worsening oxygen deficiency, this may progress to respiratory weakness.

4. Cardiovascular symptoms

Initially, hypoxemia often leads to hypotension and arrhythmias. Long-term chronic hypoxia may result in right ventricular hypertrophy and right heart failure. Additionally, some patients may progress from arrhythmias to ventricular arrest and severe hypotension, potentially leading to shock.
