Introduction
The heart is surrounded by many supporting structures, including ribs and muscles, which provide sufficient protective space. During sleep, whether lying on the left or right side, the heart will not be compressed, nor will it harm cardiac health. However, for individuals with heart conditions, prolonged side-lying may compress the heart, potentially worsening existing diseases or causing discomfort such as chest tightness and palpitations.

Side sleeping generally does not harm heart health, but if you have a pre-existing heart condition, side sleeping may affect your body.

The heart is protected by many supporting structures, including ribs and muscles, which together form the thoracic cage and provide sufficient protective space for the heart. Whether sleeping on the left side, right side, on the back, or on the stomach, the heart is typically not compressed during sleep. In the absence of heart-related disorders, side sleeping usually does not adversely affect the heart or compromise cardiac health. In fact, for individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or pregnant women, side sleeping can offer certain benefits by reducing pressure on the body and minimizing discomfort upon waking.

However, if you already have a heart condition, prolonged side sleeping may exert some pressure on the heart, potentially worsening the underlying condition or causing symptoms such as chest tightness or palpitations. In such cases, adopting a right-side lying position or sleeping on the back may be more appropriate, as these positions help promote blood circulation and reduce strain on the heart.
