Introduction
A pupil size of 5 mm can also be normal. Under normal conditions, the pupil diameter ranges from 2.5 to 4 mm. Pupils are considered dilated when larger than 5 mm and constricted when smaller than 2 mm. There are many causes of pupillary dilation, including both physiological and pathological factors. Strong stimuli such as pain, fear, or vestibular stimulation, as well as prolonged exposure to dark environments with reduced light reaching the eyes, can lead to pupil dilation.

A pupil diameter of 5 mm may also be normal. Under normal conditions, the pupil diameter ranges from 2.5 to 4 mm. Pupils are considered dilated when larger than 5 mm and constricted when smaller than 2 mm. There are various reasons for pupil dilation, including both physiological and pathological factors.

I. Physiological Factors

Strong sensations such as pain or fear, vestibular stimulation, or prolonged exposure to dark environments with reduced light stimulation to the eyes can lead to pupil dilation, which is usually considered normal.

II. Pathological Factors

1. Ocular causes: Pupil dilation may occur during or after an acute glaucoma attack, due to rupture of the iris sphincter muscle from trauma, retinoblastoma, or following eye surgery. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation. Patients should ensure adequate rest and consume foods beneficial for eye health, such as fish, carrots, and legumes, which are rich in vitamin A and vitamin B2.

2. Brain and neurological diseases: Pupil size can be affected by intracranial hemorrhage, brain injury, inflammation, and other central nervous system disorders, leading to pupil dilation. A pupil diameter of 5 mm caused by pathological conditions is typically abnormal, and patients should seek immediate medical attention. Targeted treatments should be implemented based on the underlying cause.

3. Poisoning: In cases of cholinergic drug poisoning, a pupil diameter of 5 mm may occur. Further hospital evaluation and detoxification treatment are required.

Besides the above causes, a 5 mm pupil diameter may also result from the use of mydriatic (pupil-dilating) medications. Therefore, if abnormal pupil size is observed, further medical evaluation at a hospital is necessary to determine the cause and initiate timely treatment.
