Introduction
Polygonum multiflorum is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has long been highly regarded in traditional Chinese medicine. The proper ways to consume Polygonum multiflorum include soaking it in boiling water or decocting it in water until it turns reddish-brown, then drinking the liquid. It can also be soaked together with prepared rehmannia powder and angelica powder in wine—yellow rice wine works well—and this preparation helps nourish the skin and darken hair. Polygonum multiflorum porridge has the effects of purifying the blood, calming the mind, and promoting menstruation.

Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has long been highly regarded in traditional Chinese medicine. There are many proper ways to consume it, such as steeping in water, soaking in alcohol, or cooking into porridge.

1. Steeping in Water

Polygonum multiflorum powder can be steeped in hot water, or boiled until the herb turns reddish-brown, after which it can be consumed. Drinking Polygonum multiflorum tea regularly may help prevent hair loss and improve skin appearance. However, individuals with weak spleen and stomach functions should avoid consuming it, as it may easily cause diarrhea or abdominal pain.

2. Soaking in Alcohol

Polygonum multiflorum can be soaked together with prepared rehmannia powder and angelica powder in alcohol—yellow rice wine works well—and this preparation helps nourish the skin and darken hair. However, it is not recommended for individuals with yang deficiency or spleen deficiency.

3. Cooking into Porridge

Polygonum multiflorum porridge is a traditional medicinal dish known for its blood-purifying, calming, and menstruation-regulating effects. To prepare, add rice and red dates along with a decoction of Polygonum multiflorum into a casserole, pour in an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes. Add sugar and continue cooking for a short while. This porridge is particularly suitable for postpartum women's health care.

Besides the above methods, Polygonum multiflorum can also be consumed by steaming or boiling. However, intake should be moderate, as excessive consumption may lead to symptoms of poisoning.
