Introduction
An AST level of 40 U/L may not be serious. The normal range for AST is 0–40 U/L in males and 0–35 U/L in females, so an AST level of 40 U/L might fall within the normal or borderline range and may not indicate a severe condition. AST levels are generally measured through a morning venous blood sample collected after fasting for 12 hours.
Elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) at 40 U/L may not be serious.

The normal AST level for males ranges from 0 to 40 U/L, and for females, from 0 to 35 U/L. Therefore, an AST level of 40 U/L may not indicate a serious condition. AST testing is generally recommended after fasting for 12 hours, with blood drawn from a vein in the morning. The normal values typically do not vary significantly among different age groups or populations. Abnormal levels may result from factors such as dietary habits, intense physical exercise, lifestyle, or medication use, which are usually not indicative of a severe problem.
2. Serious
However, elevated AST levels cannot rule out underlying conditions such as myocardial injury, liver disease, or bone disorders, which are often more serious and could potentially lead to life-threatening complications.
