What causes cracked foreskin?
In general, balanitis fissures may be caused by dry skin, overly vigorous sexual activity or masturbation, genital candidiasis, eczema, psoriasis, and other reasons. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly, identify the underlying cause, and receive symptomatic treatment under the guidance of a qualified physician. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Dry Skin
In dry environments, the foreskin may lose moisture, resulting in reduced elasticity and increased fragility. Even minor physical stress can then lead to cracking. Maintaining local moisture by applying moisturizers or lubricants to the foreskin is helpful. Avoid using harsh or irritating cleansers.
2. Overly Vigorous Sexual Activity or Masturbation
Excessively rough movements during sexual intercourse or masturbation may directly damage the foreskin tissue, leading to fissures. This is especially likely when the foreskin opening is narrow. Keep the area clean to prevent infection.
3. Genital Candidiasis
Genital candidiasis is usually caused by *Candida albicans*. When immunity is low or the local environment is moist, the fungus may overgrow and cause infection of the foreskin, resulting in fissures. Symptoms may include severe itching, burning sensation, and white discharge. Treatment should follow medical advice and may include antifungal medications such as fluconazole capsules, itraconazole dispersible tablets, or metronidazole-clotrimazole effervescent tablets.
4. Eczema
Eczema is commonly triggered by genetic factors or immune dysfunction. When eczema affects the foreskin, it compromises the skin barrier, potentially causing fissures. Symptoms may include intense itching (often worse at night), dryness, and flaking. Patients may use medications such as desonide cream, fexofenadine hydrochloride tablets, or erythromycin ointment as directed by a physician.
5. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is generally caused by environmental triggers and polygenic inheritance, leading to abnormally rapid proliferation of skin cells. This results in red plaques covered with silvery-white scales. In severe cases, the foreskin may be affected, causing fissures. Symptoms may also include joint pain and nail changes. Treatment should follow medical recommendations and may include methotrexate tablets, compound tretinoin gel, or compound aminopterin tablets.
Maintain good genital hygiene, avoid spicy and irritating foods, and engage in regular exercise to strengthen overall immunity.
