Can people with varicose veins soak their feet?
Generally, patients with varicose veins can soak their feet, but they should avoid soaking for prolonged periods or using excessively hot water. The specific reasons are as follows:
Varicose veins is a common condition characterized by enlarged, twisted, and tangled veins. Patients with varicose veins often have impaired venous return. Prolonged foot soaking may increase the burden on lower limb circulation, leading to blood stagnation in the legs and thereby worsening symptoms of varicose veins. Additionally, water that is too hot can cause dilation of blood vessels in the lower limbs, increasing blood flow into these areas. When arterial blood rapidly enters the veins but cannot return efficiently, it may exacerbate venous congestion and potentially worsen varicose vein symptoms.
When soaking feet, patients with varicose veins are advised to keep the water temperature between 37–40°C to prevent excessive vasodilation and symptom aggravation. Soaking duration should be limited to 15–20 minutes to avoid prolonged blood pooling in the lower limbs, which could increase the risk of varicose vein progression. After soaking, elevating both legs slightly may help promote venous return and reduce leg swelling. If any discomfort occurs, medical advice should be sought promptly.
In daily life, it is recommended to avoid prolonged standing or sitting, and to maintain regular physical activity to help prevent varicose veins.
